Today the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has
requested Genentech, Inc. add a boxed warning to the
product label for omalizumab, marketed as Xolair. The
boxed warning emphasizes that Xolair, used to treat
patients with asthma related to allergies, may cause
anaphylaxis.

Approves New Food Allergy Labeling Law - Effective
January 1, 2006, manufacturers are required to list the
presence of certain ingredients (such as milk, peanuts,
egg, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, wheat and soy) in food
products. They will also be required to list any of the
aforementioned ingredients when used as flavorings,
additives, or colorings in food products. The purpose of
this law is to protect allergic patients from unseen
and/or unintentional exposures.

Labeling with Boxed Warning and Medication Guide for Two
Eczema Drugs, Elidel and Protopic - The
FDA released updated product labels for the calcineurin
inhibitors, pimecrolimus and tacrolimus. Pimecrolimus is
marketed in the United States by Novartis as Elidel
cream. Tacrolimus is marketed in the United States by
Astellas Pharma as Protopic ointment.
